Population called upon to participate in the 2011 Census

BERLIN – Today – 9 May 2011 – is the reference date of the 2011 Census. On this occasion, the President of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Roderich Egeler, the President of the Land Office for Information and Technology of Nordrhein-Westfalen (IT NRW), Mr. Hans-Josef Fischer, and the President of the Office for Statistics of Berlin-Brandenburg, Professor Dr. Ulrike Rockmann, called upon the population in Germany to participate in the Census at a joint press conference held in Berlin.

By means of the Census, Germany is “taking stock“ of its population for the first time since the 1987 Population Census and since 1981 in the new Länder. It will determine how many people live in Germany, how they live and what jobs they have.

The Census data will have a direct impact not only on finance, for instance when it comes to quantifying the fiscal equalization among the Länder or to determining appropriations to municipalities. They will also serve as an indispensable basis for many political and economic decisions, especially in defining constituency boundaries or planning municipal infrastructures.

For detailed information on the Census please refer to the joint Internet portal of the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder at www.zensus2011.de.

For further information please contact the Federal Statistical Office.
